The ukulele has had a genuine revival over the past decade, and it’s not just because of its association with cheerful internet videos. It’s a legitimately excellent first string instrument — affordable, small, nylon-stringed, and kind enough to small fingers that kids as young as five can start without the barrier of soreness or hand-strain that comes with guitar. Adults who always wanted to try a string instrument but bounced off guitar often find the ukulele to be exactly the right entry point.

There are four standard sizes — soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone — and for most beginners, concert size hits the right balance of playability and sound. Soprano is the classic small ukulele, and it works well for young kids or anyone with smaller hands. Tenors and baritones are larger and produce a richer sound, but they’re generally not the starting recommendation. Instruments in the $60–$120 range from brands like Kala, Lanikai, or Ohana are well-reviewed for beginners and won’t fight you the way a cheap instrument often will.

A beginner ukulele lesson looks a lot like a beginner guitar lesson in structure: posture and holding position, chord shapes (C, F, G, Am are the big four), strumming patterns, and song application. The ukulele typically gets students playing recognizable songs faster than most instruments, which is good for motivation. Most beginners can play several chord-based songs within the first month or two of consistent practice.

Reading music is often not the focus in ukulele lessons — many teachers work primarily from tablature and chord charts, which is fine for casual playing but worth knowing if you’re hoping your child also develops music-reading skills. If that matters to you, mention it when you’re interviewing teachers. Some will incorporate notation from early on; others won’t unless you ask.

Ukulele teachers are sometimes harder to find as dedicated specialists than piano or guitar teachers, but many guitar teachers also teach ukulele well, since the underlying skills transfer significantly. When searching, look at teachers who list both instruments, and ask whether they have experience specifically with ukulele repertoire and the instrument’s particular chord vocabulary.
