The problem we kept running into
It started the way it does for a lot of families. Our kids wanted music lessons. Simple enough, right? Just find a school nearby and sign up. Except it wasn't simple at all.
We searched online and found studio websites that hadn't been updated since 2016. Phone numbers that went to voicemail — or worse, were disconnected. Google listings with the wrong hours. Facebook pages that hadn't posted in two years. One studio's website still advertised their "Fall 2019 recital."
We'd drive across town to check out a place, only to find out they didn't offer the styles our kids were interested in. Or they only had classes for tiny tots, not the age group we needed. Basic information — what styles do you teach, what ages, are you even still open — was unreasonably hard to find.
Every other industry figured this out
You can find a restaurant, read the menu, see the hours, and make a reservation in about 30 seconds. You can compare dentists, read reviews, and book an appointment from your phone. But music schools? You're on your own.
Most studio owners are incredible teachers who got into this because they love music — not because they love maintaining a website. They're busy running lessons, organizing recitals, and managing a hundred other things. Keeping an online presence updated falls to the bottom of the list. We get it.
So we built what we wished existed
LocalMusicLessons is a free, up-to-date directory of music schools across the country. Parents can search by city, browse by music type, and find the right fit for their family — without the runaround.
For studio owners, it's a free listing that actually stays current. Claim your studio, update your info, add photos, and make sure the families searching for you can actually find you. No more "is this place still open?" — your listing is your digital front door.
Where we're headed
The directory is just the beginning. We're building tools to help studios run their businesses — class scheduling, enrollment, parent communication — all the stuff that's currently scattered across spreadsheets, group texts, and sticky notes. If you run a studio, we'd love to hear what would make your life easier.
